Standards and Guidance
Abstract: Minimum statutory requirements for accessibility are laid down in Building Regulations. Other good practice guidance also exists to assist those needing to address any duties they may have under the Equality Act and other disability and occupiers’ liability legislation.
This chapter describes British and international standards, including BS8300 (Design and Management of the Built Environment), BS 9999 (Fire) and BS 9266 (Adaptable General Needs Housing) which offer in‐depth guidance on particular issues. It also covers International Standards on accessibility including those identifying safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts (BS EN 81‐70:2003) and for general built environment accessibility standards (ISO 21542:2011) which are becoming increasingly relevant as individual national standards move toward increased harmonisation.
The chapter also identifies and describes UK‐wide good practice guidance for accessibility and inclusion in health, education, historic, transport buildings and in external spaces.
