The history of earth pressure theory
In France the building of fortifications in the age of absolutism led to the first attempts to determine earth pressures, which reached the status of an engineering science theory with Coulomb's earth pressure theory (1773/1776). The hypothesis that earth pressure theory represents the crucial reference theory in the development of the modern civil engineering profession is explained in the first part of this chapter. The continuum mechanics model of earth pressure developed in the mid‐19th century as an alternative to Coulomb's classical earth pressure theory, and this is examined in the second part of this chapter. The third part analyses the slow emancipation of earth pressure research from theory of structures and describes its integration into the evolving disciplinary structure of geotechnical engineering. This chapter represents the first comprehensive history of earth pressure theory from 1700 to the present day.
