Lowther Castle & Gardens
At Lowther the castle is a roofless ruin but the building remains the focus of a remarkable surviving seventeenth century garden. The task of planning how to re‐open the site after being dormant for seventy years had to concentrate on the site itself, taking into account the extensive archive and a considerable amount of research. The site reveals its own story but it was vital to walk every inch of the landscape before deciding how it could now be presented and managed. Although the Edwardian period at Lowther saw Cumbria's own Thomas Mawson adding a number of themed gardens it is the sheer enormous scale of the surviving seventeenth century garden that dominates the site.
