Undersea Aqueduct System
The National Engineering Science Company (NESCO) and the United Technology Center (UTC) have explored the development of an undersea aqueduct system along the Pacific Coast that would transfer large quantities of freshwater from areas of surplus to areas of need in California and the Pacific Southwest. The system's undersea pipelines are titled “mainland shelf aqueducts” because they would be located on the mainland shelf, which is the shallowest portion of the continental shelf off the Pacific Coast. The undersea system's primary features are discussed, along with the bouyancy concept, the hydraulic profile of the system, water costs, the mainland shelf, undersea canyons, and maintenance and conservation issues.
