The Water‐Energy Nexus in Water and Wastewater Treatment
The phrase “water ‐ energy nexus” has been on the lips of virtually everyone in the water industry for several years now. Whereas the phrase was vaguely seductive 10 years ago, it has become almost blasé today. But with increasing recognition of the critical role that energy consumption has to play in the more efficient treatment of our drinking water and wastewater, this is becoming an area of greater focus for most utility planners and operators. Given highly visible challenges like the ongoing California water crisis, the vast consumption of power in more and more parts of the world to desalinate seawater for drinking, the water necessary to extract deep shale gas, nuclear plants having to be shut down as a result of low river flows, and so on, this critical intertwining of ‐ and trade‐offs between ‐ water and energy is quickly becoming a key focus of policymakers, plant operators, and the broader informed public.
