Architecture in Latent Space
Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging reality for the architectural discipline. Among many aspects, AI fundamentally opens up access to a new approach to formal experiments through the concept of ‘latent space’. The notion of latent space marks in fact the definitive transition in architecture from numerical parameters to semantic descriptors or, in other words, from parametricism to semanticism. Recent research developments have devised the concept of ‘latent space’, opening up AI models and providing them with more transparency. By leveraging this new concept, models conceived by Nvidia Research (StyleGAN) have shown their ability to find important features, to decouple them from one another in latent space, to finally allow, for instance, a highly realistic and controlled synthesis of human faces images. From simple forms to more qualitative architectural concepts, the latent space can be the opportunity to weave together complex realities.
