Toxic Algae as a Public Health Hazard
Some species of algae have been labelled as poisonous for 80‐90 years, and some have been recognized as a public health hazard for 25‐30 years. The purpose of this article is to review what is known about the toxicity of algae and the danger they present, or it is suspected that they present, to man. The subject is categorized in three parts. The first part deals with algae that is known to be a public health hazard. The second and third parts deal with species of marine and freshwater algae that are toxic to fish and various animals.
