Implications of discharging potable water in Southern California
Water utility managers need to consider a wide range of effects when controlling discharge parameters.
Controlling periodic discharges of potable water into streambeds, reservoirs, and flood‐control channels presents a wide range of challenges for water utility managers. The authors examine the physical, chemical, and biological effects of discharges, which are regulated by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System program. They also warn that future regulation of discharges will become more severe, limiting options for utilities and making permits more difficult to obtain.
