The book presents the background, testing procedures, and analysis methodology needed to assess the fracture behavior of brittle materials, particularly ceramics. It emphasizes that ceramics should be considered as a broad category of brittle materials, ranging from single crystals of semiconducting compounds to polycrystalline bodies containing multiple grains as well as grain boundary phases. Most materials that fail in a brittle manner are subjected to a susceptibility to slow crack growth due to environmental conditions. This phenomenon is critical to behavior and design. It means that a material may survive initial loading, but may fail after some time under load.
