Active and passive earth pressure
The characteristic earth pressures can be determined according to the graphical and/or analytical methods given in DIN 4085. Other methods, e.g. numerical, are permitted if it can be ensured that they result in the same earth pressures as the methods in that standard. The cohesion in cohesive soils may be taken into account when calculating the active and passive earth pressures provided the soil must be undisturbed, permanently protected against drying out and freezing, and should not become very soft when kneaded. The chapter also discusses determining active earth pressure according to the Culmann method; for a steep, paved embankment in a partially sloping waterfront structure; and shielding on a wall below a relieving platform with average ground surcharges. Measures for increasing the passive earth pressure in front of waterfront structures are then discussed. Finally, the chapter talks about waterfront structures in seismic regions.
