Design Exploration and Steering of Design
Axel Kilian is an architect and Assistant Professor at the Princeton University School of Architecture. He is a key member of the Smartgeometry community. He argues that advances in computation should not be seen as replacing or limiting the role of the designer but rather as a means to enhance design exploration. His PhD work addressed a few exemplary approaches to design exploration based on solvers. An example of a flexible approach is the use of solvers that allow for the bidirectional linking of design elements. But beyond the implementation limitations, substantially different types of design explorations exist that benefit from different computational approaches. In his PhD, he discusses three design exploration case studies: firstly, fine tuning of established design problems; secondly, exploration as the definition of new design problems from scratch; and thirdly, exploration as exercising a computational instrument for design discoveries.
