Three Seaside Wonders
Pharos, Mausoleum and Colossus
The idea of the Seven Wonders was genuinely ancient. Greek artists are prominent among the makers of the Seven Sights, yet another indication that the list derives from the third‐century Hellenistic world. Greeks created the Temple of Artemis, the Statue of Zeus, the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. No fewer than four of the Seven Wonders, the Mausoleum, the rebuilt Temple of Artemis, the Colossus, and the Lighthouse, take us into the heart of this Ionian world, an area perpetually poised between the competing cultures of Greece and Persia. Seaside constructions like the Mausoleum, the Colossus, and the Lighthouse, were all built without the help of hydraulic cement. A marvel of architecture and technology, the lighthouse, set on the island of Pharos, served as an inspired prelude to the city that was itself one of the marvels of the world.
