This article discusses the need for standardization of materials and equipment in Latin America. The rapid industrialization of the area and the formation of trade alliances such as the Area Latino‐Americana de Libre Comercio and the Central American Common Market have emphasized the need for standardization. For such alliances and exchanges to be successful, not only raw materials but also, more importantly, manufactured products must be standardized. The article discusses the reorganization and reactivation of the Pan‐American Standards Committee (CPANT), whose goal is to stabilize Latin America through technology. The article discusses the progress of the plastic pipe industry in the U.S. as an excellent example of the need for standardization.
