False Creek North
With Vancouver aiming to become the world's greenest city by 2020, the example of False Creek North and its residential towers shows that density plays a major role in this complex equation. Situated ‘on the edge of wilderness’, the high‐rises help – paradoxically, as some might say – to retain a strong relationship to the city's magnificent natural setting even in the midst of intense population growth. The development of the 67 hectares (166 acres) of the Concord Pacific Place site is an important chapter in the history of the entire False Creek inlet which delimits the southern edge of Vancouver's Downtown Peninsula. In terms of high‐rise typology, False Creek North marks the opposite of the slab‐in‐park type which represented a sudden break from a traditional urban logic with streets as clearly designated negatives of the built mass.
