The disposal of sludge from lime water softening plants has been a major operating problem since municipal lime water softening was begun in the United States some 60 years ago. Although lime sludge disposal by lagooning has been practiced more extensively than all other methods of disposal for several decades, there are few data and little in the literature to assist in avoiding the annoyances commonly arising from this method of disposal. This discussion is an evaluation of some of the variables, in hopes of avoiding some of the difficulties that may arise. Sludge disposal practices in Illinois is discussed, along with sludge volume, and transportation.
