Measurement of Existing Buildings, Destructive and Nondestructive Testing
This chapter explores the difficulties of the monitoring process, the most common methods to measure the quantities with reasonable reliability, and some rules of thumb so that the engineer understands the limits and limitations for an acceptably accurate survey. Inspecting members' reinforcement is mainly done with nondestructive methods with the use of ferrous or metal detectors, designed to find and estimate the rebar size in concrete structures, and to accurately provide the depth of concrete cover and the plaster above it. The most common destructive method for the evaluation of the concrete mechanical characteristics of existing buildings is the crushing of cores extracted from representative structural members. The ultrasonic pulse velocity test is used to determine the concrete strength by evaluating the homogeneity and integrity of the concrete. In order to estimate the grade of concrete of the building, a combination of destructive and nondestructive methods is typically carried out.
