Disciplinary Displacements: The Revaluation of Conventions through the Postgraduate Thesis
The school of architecture at the Cooper Union, New York has historically been renowned for its imaginative pedagogy and experimental architectural propositions. The work of post‐professional students here culminates in their design thesis project, explored and developed through thesis studios. One such studio in 2019, led by Assistant Professor Michael Young and his teaching partner Anna Bokov, asked the question ‘What is Contemporary?’ Young sets out the particular value of design theses in comparison to undergraduate theses, and how this studio investigated performance, bodies in space and numerous points of view constructing what architecture might be in the 21st century.
