What Is a Personal Construct?
This chapter discusses the nature of personal constructs by first looking at what a construct is not ‐ its opposite pole. It is then argued that constructs are not concepts or rules but bipolar abstractions which are the basis of our predictions about the world and pathways of movement. It is then postulated that the function of constructs is to enable a person to discriminate between things/events/people. The hierarchical structure in which constructs exist is elucidated, as is the importance of superordinate constructs in relation to resistance to change. Further features of personal constructs are noted, including how they are used at different levels of awareness. The relationship between constructs/construing and how a person behaves and gains control over his/her world is examined along with the issue of constructs being inseparable from feelings and their relationship to motivation. Finally, the chapter describes the importance of constructs in a counseling relationship.
