Optimising how we Manage Water and Wastewater
This chapter looks at optimising water and wastewater management in the broader sense. Optimising water and wastewater management is to some degree dependent on the effective integration of different aspects of network monitoring and management. The most efficient water and wastewater utilities are those that use the fewest assets to deliver the highest quality service at the lowest cost through optimising their activities. Effective monitoring of water quality through the network identifies potential areas where the distribution mains are deteriorating and where this impacts water quality. Real time monitoring enables the utility to treat its water to ensure that all applicable quality criteria are satisfied without the need for excessive treatment. Sewerage level monitoring and warning systems enable utilities to prevent pollution incidents both from the discharge from the combined sewer overflow (CSO) and in ensuring that there are no overflows within the sewerage network.
