Implementing the pyramid strategy took more than communications. The first step in the strategy was to build a strong board of directors, led by a strong ExCom. The ExCom's first priority was to improve operations in lagging offices. The author's assistant Susie kept a list of action items in the weekly ExCom workbook, and during each Monday call they reviewed them. HOK had outgrown its ExCom, just as it had outgrown the original board of directors. Virtual meetings can serve architects well, whether their people work in separate cities or are on the road a lot. There is no excuse not to connect. The combination of weekly meetings and action‐oriented discussions began to shape the ExCom into a truly effective team. The chapter suggests that sharing financial reports openly with firm leaders will make them become a force for improvement; and never to underestimate the value of humor to help teams smooth out their differences.
