This chapter focuses on soil parameters for the analysis and design of shallow and deep foundations. Types of foundation failures and factors of safety are explained. Bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations; settlement analysis; computation of stresses in soils due to applied loads; and evaluation of lateral earth pressures (active, passive and at rest conditions) are discussed. Correlations with field tests are also presented with several examples worked out.
