The discipline‐formation period of theory of structures
The constitution of the energy doctrine of theory of structures and the introduction of Clapeyron's theorem of three moments is followed by a description of the development and establishment of graphical statics by Culmann, Maxwell, Rankine and Cremona. The transformation of graphical statics into graphical analysis is then presented and interpreted as an element in the rationalisation of everyday engineering work. This chapter focuses on the formation of the theory of statically indeterminate trussed frameworks by Maxwell and Mohr plus its further development to create the theory of statically indeterminate truss systems by Müller‐Breslau. The dispute between Mohr and Müller‐Breslau concerning the principles of classical theory of structures is closely related to this. This dispute intensified until the formation of the Berlin school of theory of structures on the one side and the Dresden school of applied mechanics on the other.
