Algorithmic Urban Planning: The Return of Experts
This chapter aims to question the impact of the digitization process on urban planning methods. It looks at the links between territories and technological developments, in particular in order to present the impact of the data produced by these new technologies, these famous Big Data. Urban planning in the age of smart and Big Data is essentially a matter of experts and geeks who can define the outlines and objectives of the algorithm. The chapter examines the heterogeneity of the forms that the smart city can take, and more specifically the links that exist with another dominant concept in urban planning theories and practices, that of the sustainable city. It discusses the significance of these transformations in light of urban planning theories, putting forth the idea that digital technology renews the rational approach by giving it a new smart and durable veneer.
