Looking to the Future
This chapter reviews the preceding chapters and the reasons why stakeholders might retrofit a green roof. Benefits include thermal performance, stormwater attenuation, species conversation, promotion of biodiversity, urban food production and provision of spaces for social engagement and interaction. Often the primary reason for green roof retrofit is the only one considered, and other co‐benefits are not recognised. This chapter articulates the primary reason along with co‐ or secondary benefits that stakeholders might, more readily, understand the full range of benefits that exist. The chapter reviews the latest initiatives in best practice at the city scale, before moving on to examine the complex, and thorny, issue of whether mandatory or voluntary approaches are the best way to deliver greater uptake of green roof retrofit. Finally, we look to the future and conclude that for numerous stakeholders the benefits of green roof retrofit are derived at all levels from the city scale to the building scale and the individual scale.
