Conditions and Mechanisms of Hydraulic Fracturing
This chapter investigated the conditions of its formation, and mechanisms. The four conditions of the hydraulic fracturing in the earth‐rock fill dams, which are the crack located at upstream face of core, the low permeability of core soil, the rapid impounding and the unsaturated soil core, were described and analyzed. The “water wedging” action is the mechanical source that induces the hydraulic fracturing, but it can only form in unsaturated core soil. The mechanical mechanism of the hydraulic fracturing is that the “water wedging” action changes the intensity of nominal stress near the tip of the crack. The problem of the hydraulic fracturing in the earth‐rock fill dams may be investigated and solved using the theories and analyzing methods in Fracture Mechanics.
