Experimental Observations on Salt Crystallization in Geomaterials
This chapter focuses on an experimental assessment of salt crystallization by looking inside geomaterials while salt transport, salt crystallization and crystallization‐induced damage occur. It discusses the use of non‐destructive imaging techniques, that is, X‐ray and neutron imaging, for the experimental study of geomaterials. The chapter starts with a short introduction on X‐ray and neutron imaging, and then continues with two illustrative examples to elucidate on salt crystallization in a limestone and a sandstone. The focus lies on NaCl crystallization, but the techniques can be used for any kind of salt precipitation in geomaterials. The experimental characterization and quantification are also discussed in detail. The ultimate goal of these types of experiments is to fully comprehend the complex problem of salt precipitation and salt damage in geomaterials in order to predict salt damage risks and to aid in the design of preventive or conservation measures.
