The spatial field is important such that any buildings or dwellings have character and give a sense of belonging to the family. So also, the form must suit the climate and the rhythms of the day and night. Good architecture should receive human visitors and should enable them to live there. This chapter examines the issue of managing a good built form and highlights the various built form determinants: daylight and shadow, density, energy use, dimensionality, adjacency, fitness function, and character and complexity. Hertzberger aimed at ‘designing spaces that can be changed or be modified over time, and to creating forms that are incomplete and therefore allow people the freedom to fill them in. The most distinctive division for ‘use type’ is between those for a public purpose (e.g., national or local administration and civic or social services) and those for a private purpose (generally residential and dwellings).
