Fire Safety in Buildings
This chapter introduces the overall strategy for providing fire safety in buildings, and identifies the roles of fire resistance and structural performance as important parts of that strategy. One of the more durable frameworks for fire safety assessment is the Fire Safety Concepts Tree developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The objectives for providing fire resistance need to be established before making any design, recognizing that fire resistance is only one component of the overall fire safety strategy. One of the difficulties in assessment of fire safety is the extent to which some fire protection measures can be 'traded off' against others. The chapter discusses the control of fire movement, or fire spread in four categories: within the room of origin; to other rooms on the same level; to other storeys of the same building; and to other buildings.
