Early Greek urbanism
This chapter will focus on the Early Iron Age [EIA] emergence and then the pathway to florescence of the Classical to Hellenistic Greek city in the Aegean, with some cross‐reference to developments in the contemporary world of ‘the Greeks overseas’ (avoiding the contentious term ‘colonies’). It covers urban theory, the definition of the ‘town’, and as small irregularly‐planned post‐palatial communities are transformed into grid‐planned cities with elaborate infrastructures, it analyses the underlying changes in society and economy. Alongside public buildings, domestic architecture is presented as symptomatic of the dynamics of social life changing over time.
