Chemicals in Water and Their Significance
This article discusses the significance of the chemical constituents of water as related to its intended use. The article discusses the chemicals in the water for domestic use in the Minnesota area and the effect these chemicals have on the water such as hardness, taste, color, and corrosion and scale formation in distribution systems. Beneficial effects of chemicals found in water are also discussed, along with techniques for mitigation of the undesireable effects. Specific topics discussed include: transport of wastes; nitrate toxicity; chemicals in detergents; mineral nutrients; water as a tracer; and, contamination from human activity.
