In his column, AWWA Executive Director Jack Hoffbuhr discusses the aversion to overcoming inertia as related to volunteer‐based groups such as AWWA that tend to resist overcoming inertia because of concern over member acceptance and risk of failure. He points out that it usually takes a crisis to make a change, illustrating his point with the example of AWWA in 1987 being near bankruptcy. Due to dedicated volunteer/staff leadership who were willing to make some changes, AWWA is now vibrant, financially robust, and globally respected. He lists changes that AWWA has made that have kept it relevant in today's fast‐paced world, but also points out that AWWA will need to continue to change to keep up the level of service required by the public.
