Lycia
Lycia became a province of the Roman Empire in 43 ce . While Roman influence and presence was already perceptible in the region, significant development of the urban infrastructure occurred in many Lycian cities and towns immediately following the establishment of the province. Due to varying factors, however, urban development programs reached different levels at different places. In addition to Roman emperors and officials, members of the local elite also appeared as founders and benefactors. Although the increase of Roman influence on Lycian material culture, particularly architecture, can be noted during the Imperial period, the province remained rooted in the Greek world and preserved its own Lycian cultural heritage. Due to intensive archaeological surveys and the excellent state of preservation of many ancient buildings, the acculturation processes that acted on Lycia can be observed in both urban areas and the countryside.
