Water Quality
While achieving “good” water quality is an easy metric to set as an environmental goal, in practice it is difficult to define. Good water quality means having acceptable levels of desired constituents, such as dissolved oxygen (DO) and low levels of undesired contaminants. Other parameters, such as water temperature and pH, must also be within acceptable ranges. The addition of biodegradable organic matter to a water will lead to lowered DO concentrations and possibly death to aquatic organisms. A number of organic pollutants may be present in urban stormwater. Hydrocarbons can be present in fuels or other components of vehicle fluids. The presence of high concentrations of nutrients in water will trigger a series of events that lead to low DO, anoxia, and mortality of aquatic life. Pathogens are disease‐causing organisms. These organisms may include bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Common microbial pathogens include those that cause waterborne diseases such as salmonella, cholera, hepatitis, and giardiasis.
