Wind Characteristics in Atmospheric Boundary Layer
This chapter focuses on turbulent wind characteristics near the ground surface. Turbulent wind is first defined on the basis of the observation of measurement wind data in the field. Mean wind speeds and profiles are then introduced, followed by the characterization of turbulent winds in terms of the theory of statistics and probability. For the purpose of bridge design, extreme wind speeds are discussed, the method of predicting design wind speed is outlined, and wind directional effects are pointed out. Taking the Tsing Ma suspension bridge in Hong Kong as an example, wind characteristics on the bridge site are demonstrated through extensive analyses of wind data recorded on the site.
