Eine Plattform für die Wissenschaft: Bauingenieurwesen, Architektur und Urbanistik
In this chapter, the author deals with the design of door handles, taking the handle designed by Peter Eisenman as an example. Eisenman prefers his buildings to have square ground plans. Like Tadao Ando in Japan, for him the cube with sides of the same length is the ideal body. Eisenman is not opening just the world of painting for us, but that of architecture as well. From ground plan to door handle, from window opening to lavatory bowl everything is governed by the square. As far as the latter is concerned, the same point needs to be made as was made about the hand. The author also refers to the handle designed by a Düsseldorf designer that he considers definitely unusable. It is quite obvious that its cultural concept was to make one of Kandinsky's pictorial elements into a useful item.
