Hundreds of seniors who say that their trek to their automobiles (while often pulling a little canvas wagon) keeps them young and definitely keeps them connected. Furthermore, it leads to deep relationships that lasted for the rest of their lives. In self‐developed projects like cohousing, there are so many opportunities to break the mold. Zoning was invented in the early twentieth century, and it was designed to keep people of color out of white neighborhoods. The discovery and championing of intergenerational cohousing as a model for senior cohousing are what jumpstarted senior cohousing in Denmark. Intergenerational cohousing had proven that proximity—in combination with the intent of creating a highly functional neighborhood—played a key role in people knowing each other, caring about each other, and supporting each other over time. Perches of every sort have to be factored into the design of a one‐building single‐loaded corridor solution, like here at Mountain View Cohousing.
