Trends in Landfill Leachate Treatment Through Biological Biotechnology
Sanitary landfills are modern technology for wastes management and control. However, the generation of landfill leachate is a great issue regarding landfills. Biological treatment is known as one of the most popular practices for leachate treatment, mainly due to the high efficiency and cost‐effectiveness. The present chapter reviews aerobic/anaerobic biological methods as a widespread technique for leachate treatment. The review investigated the efficiency of different reactors such as membrane bioreactor, tricking filter, sequencing batch reactor, rotating biological contactor, lagoons, and upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors for the removal of COD, BOD 5 , and nitrogen compounds from landfill leachate.
