Groundwater Occurrence, Availability, and Rechargeability
The groundwater situation is quite complex and highly heterogeneous in occurrence, diversified geological formations, climatic variations, and changing hydrochemical environments from region to region and within regions across the world. Aquifer conditions vary from deep alluvial aquifers to hard‐rock aquifers. Because groundwater is invisible below the surface of the land, the public have limited knowledge and perception about groundwater in terms of both distribution and quality. People judge its availability in terms of depth to the groundwater table, and the quality in terms of color, odor, and taste. Declining water tables induce change, including seepage to groundwater from surface water sources polluted with sewage, agricultural fertilizers, and industrial by‐products. Increasing groundwater use and pollution generation have crossed sustainable limits in many areas. Only shallow aquifers receive recharge from surface water while the deeper aquifers, which contain water accumulated thousands of years ago, cannot be recharged from surface water sources.
