Land Subsidence Along the Delta‐Mendota Canal, California
This article begins by providing a brief overview of land subsidence and one of its most common causes ‐ overdraft of confined or artesian groundwaters where pumpage exceeds recharge. The Delta‐Mendota Canal in California's San Joaquin Valley is presented as an outstanding example of subsidence, particularly subsidence “lag”, a condition that is created when little or no pumping occurs, thus decreasing the overdraft.
