HIGH‐DEFINITION MODELING OF COMPOSITE BEAMS
This paper presents a high‐definition modelling approach for the simulation of the flexural behaviour of composite beams that accounts for the principal mechanisms associated with strength, stiffness, and ductility. The goal of the modelling approach presented is to enable parametric studies on the ultimate capacity of composite beams involving different amounts of shear transfer provided, various placement configurations of shear connectors, variable geometry of deck and shear connectors, and different materials. The study presented begins with the simulation of push‐out tests that are validated against experimental results in literature. A recent experiment performed by NIST is used as the validation platform for the study. After validation, some parametric analyses are presented, and it is concluded that the modelling approach discussed herein is appropriate to predict the initial and post‐peak flexural behaviour of composite beams. Recommendations are also made regarding the placement of shear connectors.
