Public Parks and Their Conservation
The Victorian park movement was initiated in 1833 by the Select Committee on Public Walks who recognised that the poor in the large cities had no access to open space, or contact with nature. Manchester was the first city to create parks and early parks were created in the North West of England, in Glasgow and in London's East End. Until 1875 the creation of parks was restricted by legislation.
Joseph Paxton was an influential figure, not only for his own work, but also for the designers that he trained. His first design was Birkenhead Park; his best known is Crystal Palace Park, Sydenham in South London, with its huge terraces. On the highest point stood the Crystal Palace, originally built for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park. Below were magnificent floral displays, cascades and fountains, with lakes at the lowest level. These were ‘inhabited’ by dinosaurs (Grade I) representing the latest knowledge at that time. They are still there today.
