Determination of the Mechanism of an Accident Involving a Fire and an Explosion
It had to be discriminated between an explosion and a fire as the initial phenomenon of an accident which occurred in the basement of a residential building. An explosion occurred in a residential building, when a resident came out of his flat and switched on the common parts of the ground floor. The analysis of damage showed that the thermal effects were very significant in the basement since different things have been marked by the flame: the wooden parts of a piece of furniture and of the staircase, as well as clothing burnt. The mechanism of the accident has been the following one: firstly, a fire occurred in the basement, and it was intense enough to cause the lead pipe to melt; this melting created a leak orifice, through which an ignited jet of natural gas leaked into the basement, and the fire propagated to the combustible materials present; and so on.
