Regulations and their Scope of Applicability
Chapter 3 covers the chronological development of standards for the design and construction of LNG storage tanks. The American API codes 12A to 12G dating from the 1920s led to the publication of API 620 for steel tanks with its appendices Q and R for storage temperatures down to ‐50°C and ‐165°C respectively. ACI Committee 376 began drawing up an American code for concrete tanks in 2005, and ACI 376 was first published in 2011.
The first European standards for cryogenic tanks appeared in the UK. The British Standards for steel tanks, BS 4741 and BS 5387, were later replaced by BS 7777, which covered single, double and full containment tanks plus prestressed concrete outer tanks.
