Fundamental characteristics of water treatment plant sludges
Waste sludge samples obtained from several water treatment facilities in the Commonwealth of Virginia were used in laboratory‐scale dewatering studies that emphasized a review of floc microproperties, such as size distribution, shape, and density, and their impact on sludge filtration rates. Methods applicable to the measurement of floc size, density, shear strength, and water content were evaluated. The use of the Atterberg liquid limit test for providing data related to shear strength considerations was also experimentally reviewed.
