The Future of City Logistics – Trends and Developments Leading toward a Smart and Zero‐Emission System
This chapter identifies the main trends and developments influencing city logistics that will enable, through new opportunities and expected policies, smart and zero‐emission city logistics initiatives in the near future. In order to identify relevant trends, the chapter provides a long list of trends and developments based on desktop research that influences the city logistics system. The chapter classifies and shows how the six main city logistics segments, that is general cargo, temperature controlled logistics, parcel and express mail, facility logistics, construction logistics and waste collection, could develop based on the identified trends and developments. It also identifies how the expected developments can shape city logistics in the coming years for these main segments. The chapter focuses on the main challenges, trends and developments that influence the way urban freight transport and services are organized. Following the existing trends and developments, the chapter concentrates on the performance‐based regulation scheme for city logistics operations.
