One‐dimensional Models for Dynamic Fragmentation of Brittle Materials
This chapter provides validation of fragmentation results from monolithic materials, implications of fragment statistics from a material with a heterogeneous distribution of strain rates and computational insights into fragmentation of brittle multi‐phase materials. It considers mono‐phase brittle materials to be those for the distribution describing that the random critical strength is uniform across the entire domain. For their part, in contrast to mono‐phase materials, multi‐phase brittle materials are those for which different distributions describing the random material properties are specified for each constituent phase. The chapter focuses on extracting information about the average fragment size in multi‐phase composite materials. It examines the distribution of fragment size as a function of the externally applied strain rate and the composition of the multi‐phase composite material. The chapter presents an overview of some key aspects of a one‐dimensional model that simulates the dynamic fragmentation of brittle materials.
