Mechanism of Manganese Solution in Lake Waters
This article discusses conclusions by the authors that microbiologic activity is involved in the solution and increase in concentration of manganese in the hypolimnion of an artificial lake studied; that dead or dying cells are not the major source of the manganese, although they may be the source of organic matter which is used in the metabolism of certain bacteria which release the manganese into solution by reduction of manganese dioxide. The presence of such complexing agents as carbonic acid, tannin, and lignin accelerates the rate of increase in manganese concentration. The roots of a heavy brush cover in a tight soil can create a large BOD, thus producing DO‐free groundwater and contributing to the solution of manganese.
