Sustainable and Desirable Living Thanks to Smart Buildings
This chapter defines smart buildings by illustrating the services they can offer thanks to the vast amount of data they can collect and manage, particularly in the case of tertiary buildings. It develops several examples of the use of data in building management. The chapter illustrates the contribution of blockchain technology to smart buildings with two examples. It presents and compares two examples of tertiary buildings –one renovated, the other new – at the Université Catholique de Lille. By multiplying the number of sensors in a building, a large amount of data can be collected via a wired or wireless communication network. Building information modelling provides a digital mock‐up of a building, a kind of digital twin, which promotes collaboration between the various building stakeholders throughout the building's life cycle, from programming to design, construction, operation and deconstruction.
