Perspective on UHPCs from a Specialist Construction Company
Ultra high performance concretes (UHPC) exhibit exceptional mechanical and durability properties. This chapter discusses the development of UHPCs in Australia. It presents examples of UHPC structures that have been designed and constructed in Australasia from the perspective of a local construction specialist. UHPC has been used around the world predominantly in the construction of pedestrian and road bridges, protective panels and architectural applications. Applications in Australia and New Zealand described in the chapter include the first road bridge built using an UHPC, a series of footbridges in New Zealand providing ramp access to train stations, panels at a power station that are subjected to continuous salt water spray, and infrastructure protection panels on a freeway sound wall. The UHPC described here is of the reactive powder concrete (RPC) type known under the brand name Ductal® and originally developed by Rhodia, Lafarge and Bouygues.
