Content Hierarchy
The two most common types of content are objects and assemblies. Objects are stand‐alone components, such as windows and doors, and assemblies are a series of components that work together to create a single element. Materials are the baseline from which all graphics are derived. The chapter shows how materials are entered into objects and assemblies, acting as the basis of the Building information modeling (BIM) hierarchy. The BIM project is the culmination of all assemblies and components used in the actual project. BIM projects can be used for everything from massing studies and basic schematic design, to cost estimating and scheduling, to facility management and project analysis. The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) maintains a series of standards and formats recognized by the architectural and construction communities that are the most effective methods of cataloguing information within a BIM.
